During the Roman Empire, a lotterie was also held in the town of Ghent. In the Middle Dutch language, the word “lotinge” could be translated as “calque.”

By the 17th century, lotteries were common across Europe. In the Roman Empire, they were considered entertainment at dinner parties. However, some bishops criticized lotteries as exploiting poor people.
