The Basics of Poker

The game of poker is a card game where players place bets over a series of rounds. The player with the best five-card hand wins the pot. Depending on the rules, one or more players must put an initial amount into the pot before the cards are dealt (these are called forced bets).

After the ante and blind bets have been placed, three community cards are dealt – this is the flop. Then another round of betting takes place. The players with seats located closest to the button act first in this round. Seats located to the left of the button are in Early Position and those to the right are in Late Position.

After the players have acted in this round, they may fold their cards or raise them. They can also continue to check if they wish. A player wishing to stay in the pot must match or raise the total stakes of the last raiser (or else they must fold). The player with the highest hand wins the pot, whether it is a full house, a flush or a pair.
