The Power of Entertaiment

Entertaiment is a word that means agreeable occupation for the mind, diversion, or amusement: The daily crossword is an entertainment for many people.

The power of entertainment is seen in the way that one medium inspires a retelling in another — for example, the story of Scheherazade from the professional storytelling tradition inspired orchestral works by Rimsky-Korsakov and Ravel, films by Pasolini and others, and innovative video games. Similarly, activities that were once part of work or war have become spectator sports.

Entertainment can be adapted to fit any scale from the individual who chooses private entertainment, through banquets and parties, to performances intended for thousands, and even global audiences. Entertainment also demonstrates a seemingly infinite potential for creative remix. Often, a familiar form will cross over into different media, as has been the case with stories about Scheherazade.
