Entertaiment is a word used to describe anything that affords pleasure, diversion or amusement. It can range from a single person choosing their own private entertainment from the now enormous selection of available pre-recorded products; to a banquet arranged for two; to an evening of performances intended for thousands; and on and on. It is sometimes abbreviated entmt on fliers or industry news publications and may be written that way on short hand notes.
The experience of being entertained has become so strongly associated with amusement that one common understanding of the word is fun and laughter, although many entertainments have a serious purpose, as in various styles of ceremony, celebration, religious festival, or satire for instance.
