Entertaiment is a form of enjoyment and can take many forms. It can be an activity for an individual, such as selecting a private entertainment from the now enormous range of pre-recorded products; it may be a banquet adapted to two; it may be a performance intended for thousands; or a combination. It can be satirical, religious or ceremonial in nature or it may have a serious purpose as in a wedding or funeral for example.
The word derives from the medieval Latin inter tenere and is also related to the Indo-European root of ten, meaning “stretch.” It is an activity that is understood objectively, includes communication between text and audience, has an external stimulus, off ers pleasure, requires an audience and is passivity.
